Beyond the Assumptions brings together scholarship, clinical reflection, lived experience, and critical conversation examining kink through the intersections of care, trauma, power, embodiment, neurodiversity, sexuality, and therapeutic practice.

Across this issue, contributors challenge familiar assumptions about BDSM and pathology, explore the regulatory and relational functions of pain and sensation, examine how collective trauma can reshape our relationship to practices that once offered comfort or connection, and consider what happens when Therapeutic BDSM moves from theory into practice.

The issue also turns a critical eye toward power itself, exploring sexuality, labor, domination, stigma, and the complicated relationship between erotic practice and social structures.

These contributions invite us to become more curious about the complexity of kink, the meanings people make from their experiences, and the contexts in which those experiences unfold.

Beyond the Assumptions is an invitation to look again, ask better questions, and make room for what becomes visible when kink is examined with greater depth, rigor, and care.
